How Often Do Brake Pads Need to Be Replaced?

All brake pads should be replaced every 50,000 miles or thereabouts whether you’re experiencing problems with them or not. However, some drivers may need to have this done more often because of variables like the following:

• Your personal driving style, including how fast or slow you tend to drive in general.
• The road conditions and terrain you typically drive on.
• Whether you frequently park or drive on especially steep hills.
• How often you drive your vehicle.
• How heavy your vehicle is, whether you tow heavy loads often, and so forth.

Warning Signs You May Need Replacement Pads Sooner

Every driver should be aware of the signs that they’re due for a brake pad replacement sooner than expected. If you experience any of the following, bring your vehicle in for a brake appointment at your earliest convenience.

• Brakes that constantly squeak or squeal almost every time they’re activated and under all weather conditions, as opposed to only when you first hit the road or when it’s been damp.
• Deep, persistent grinding that sounds like metal scraping against metal when you step on the brakes.
• A brake pedal that vibrates, throbs, or feels mushy.
• Brake pads that look visibly thin – ¼ inch or less -- when you check them manually.
• An activated dashboard light indicating it’s time to check your brakes or replace your pads.
