Brake Pad Explanation

Your brakes are made up of multiple components, some of which are actually designed to wear out and be replaced sooner or later, including brake pads. Your brake pads are attached to the brake shoes, the part of the brake that clamps down on the brake drum when you activate your brakes. The friction created in the process is what actually slows or stops your car. However, that same friction is also what wears away your pads over time, so they’ll eventually need to be replaced altogether.

How Often Should Brake Pads Be Replaced?

Generally speaking, brake pads should be replaced every 30,000-35,000 miles or so. However, variables like your driving style, the type of terrain you normally drive on, and so forth can mean yours need to be replaced more frequently. (If in doubt, ask your mechanic whether this is likely for you.) You should also keep an eye out for the following warning signs that it may be time for a brake replacement sooner than anticipated:

• Dashboard lights that indicate it’s time for a replacement.
• Brakes that squeal or screech every time they’re activated, as opposed to when you’ve just started driving.
• Grinding, growling, rumbling, or other troubling noises when your brakes are activated.
• Pads that measure a quarter-inch or thinner when visually inspected.
